This feels like a woeful underestimate. Some hint of how these children will feel about all of this in the future comes from Austria this week, where an year old unnamed woman is suing her parents to force them to remove childhood pictures of her her from Facebook. She told one newspaper, 'They knew no shame and no limits But I never, or at least very rarely, post pictures of my son. I can spend hours on the phone to my mother detailing his every utterance, gesture and lavatory visit and the only result will be more questions, about how his hair was looking and whether his fingernails seem to be growing at a healthy rate. Why bring anything about your most precious and vulnerable possession to public attention? Am I paranoid? W e know there are terrible people out there dead set on doing terrible things.

I know this. And yet in October , swept away with the excitement of the birth of my son and probably a little sleep-deprived , I made a terrible mistake. I took a photo of the two of them lying side by side; one in a red Baby-gro, the other in white. Max was already a good two inches longer than the new baby, which I found startling as he was still so tiny, and he had already started to lose some of that crinkly new-baby look. On my way home, I looked at the photo and felt a swell of pride. But then the email arrived. It was from my friend. The tone was light-hearted, but she was obviously upset. Her inbox had been flooded with messages from friends congratulating her on the birth of their son. She asked if I would kindly delete the post, which I immediately did.
